History
Malken served with Henry Stern in the Navy. Malken has established himself as a privateer of some renown. Skillful and crafty, he has learned to walk the fine line between pirate and honest merchant captain. Malken and Niels have a strained relationship, with Malken bristling under Niels blunt and abrasive leadership style. A good upstanding member of his clan, Malken attends most Allthings in Paris.
Malken was born in London upon the Isle of Dogs in the year 1760. The bastard son of a local whore and an itinerate sailor, Malken was the eldest child of his mother's brood of eleven brats. The boy grew up fast in a age when life could be both brutal and short. His mother, a habitual drunkard, introduced him to a life of crime when she involved him in her avocation of prostitution. Initially just a lookout Malken graduated to pimp when he learned the fine art of haggling. The boy excelled in this ugly business to the benefit of his younger siblings who would have starved while his mother drank away the profits.
When Malken was still quite young his mother contracted siphilus and she was dead before he turned ten. It was at this point that Malken made a life altering decision when he joined the British Royal Navy. The decision itself was far from heroic, but then again Malken set aside half his pay to ensure his brothers and sisters grew up in the care of an elderly widow in need of coin. Perhaps it was simply a pragmatic decision that permitted him to escape a sordid life of poverty and starvation. Regardless of Malken's moral ambiguity he did succeed in escaping his old life for one of both danger and opportunity as a warship's powder-monkey.
Life aboard the H.M.S. Nightshade, a thirty-six gun frigate, was anything but easy. Malken's role as powder-monkey was dangerous work fetching casks of black-powder from the lower stores and bringing it to the gun deck for use in the twenty-four inch guns during battle both mock and real.
