Appearance

Matthais Desjardins' French aristocratic heritage is plain to be seen in his aquiline features, sharp nose, and widow's peak. His broad forehead, dark deep set eyes and extensive eyebrows give Matthias a intense contemplative air that adds to his religious mystique. The Fakir dresses himself in a combination of shabby Western and Oriental finery that lends him the aspect of a genteel adventurer turned native and down on his luck. But a closer inspection reveal a genuine humility and faith in the worn carpetbag that he wears over one shoulder, within are a handful of prized possessions: a prayer rug, bronze Tibetan singing bowl with wand, a old leather bound Koran, a flintlock pistol, his sabre and a Ironwood quarterstaff.

Behavior

Matthias is the calm and mysterious center of Alexandria's maelstrom. His willingness to interact with all levels of social standing regardless of caste or stigma open many doors for the Fakir that would otherwise be closed. The Apostle will quietly listen to nearly anyone, offering confession and its attendant silence for those seeking absolution, but he gives no judgement and only occasionally advice to those genuinely seeking solace. These traits grant him allies and contacts throughout Alexandrian society. As a man astride both the Oriental and Occidental worlds he is a member of all groups and none.

History

Matthias was born in the city of Salon-de-Provence in the Côte d'Azur of the South of France. The year was 1774 and the boy was born into a destitute if noble bloodline. Born a second son Matthias was bound for a ecclesiastical career, but youth and a adventurous spirit led the prodigal son to runaway to Paris and a military career in the army of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Matthias changed his shabby noble family name for the generic surname of Desjardins and a military commission. Four year of service to the French republic earned him a place in Napoleon's secret invasion of Egypt. Napoleon took Alexandria in a day, and Egypt in three weeks, along the way his army destroyed the Ottoman and Mamluk forces arrayed against him. Up to this point Matthias had been an ardent follower of Napoleon, but in late October of 1798 the citizens of Cairo rebelled against French dominion and in a single night the forces of Napoleon slaughter six thousand Egyptians in retribution.

The Revolt of Cairo and the part that Matthias had played in its suppression changed the young man. Wounded in body and spirit the young soldier was rotated back to Alexandria to recuperate. Once he was mobile and able to care for himself Matthias took his ill gotten wealth and deserted Napoleon's army. In the streets of Alexandria he was a stranger and there he took up an itinerate life as a vagabond and opium addict. And it was while Matthias sought to lose himself in narcotic hallucinations that he stumbled into the World of Dreams.

In Egypt it was called Ealam al Ahlam, the Realm of Dreams, and its Alexandrian analog was called Dhakira or the City of Memory. With his first visit to Dhakira Matthias gave up on narcotic forgetfulness and instead he took up exploration of this strange new world.

Upon his Embrace and conversion to Islam he took the Arabic name Rahim Khalid (which means the Compassionate and Eternal). Matthias is a follower of Qalandariyya (Kalandaris) a sect of wandering Sufi Fakirs.
