Calixto

Calixto is just a charlatan, but that doesn't make him ignorant or stupid. He is one of the most observant members of the Pageant and possesses an intellect to rival his perception. Calixto is aware of the strange way in which the Pageant members seem to get caught up in day-to-day minutia and he is largely immune to it. The why of this is best left up to the storyteller. For the last century, the astrologer has used his clarity of mind, pageant granted agelessness and his own considerable skills to weave together a vast network of informants and agents. He is known under a variety of names and works his will through many proxies in Dark Europe and the benighted middle-east. Calixto's powerful twin attributes of perception and intelligence combine to create a mundane mastermind who manages a mercantile empire that Augustus Giovanni would envy. Despite all that he has accomplished, Calixto seeks to master the mystical forces that he sees woven through the pageant for his own ends, and herein lie the seeds of his potential downfall. For the moment, no-one in the Pageant perceives the homosexual astrologer as anything except a talented faker, which is why he has survived so long without being dragged into any of the secret conspiracies associated with the Pageant.

As Calixto truly cares about Rambert's welfare and sees him as a would be son, he has taken notice of Rambert's sudden change in behavior and the new nocturnal schedule that he keeps. Thus the astrologer has done the math and has come up with a correct if incomplete answer. Calixto has long known about Theodoric the Goth, having investigated the nocturnal bard through his many agents in Italy, and he rightly fears the vampire as a blood-drinking predator and a former emperor. Perhaps because of his deep feelings for Rambert, he just cannot admit what his senses tell him, that his adopted son has become one of the damned. Unfortunately, he still holds out hope that the young man he loves can still be saved from the horrors of undeath. So it is that Calixto has twin reasons for turning to his most valuable acquisitions, astrological scrolls of ancient Egyptian origin which detail the primordial deacons and their associated demons, the decani lords of disease.
