Sobriquet: The Astrologer

Appearance: Calixto is a hansom elderly man with soft mien. His silvery hair hangs past his shoulders and his beard is clean and well cared for. He likes to wear fine robes of subdued colors and wears jewelry that give him a mystical air. Calixto's height and stance give him authority that combined with his age makes him a automatic father figure that most people immediately seek reassurance from.

Behavior: Calixto is a consummate con-artist, err...astrologer. He meets with clients who search for answers in the stars and seek his counsel. Calixto's primary gift is in reading people and better yet, understanding them. While he is a more than proficient astrologer, primarily he listens to people and their problems, regardless of how foolish or disturbing, he always tries to offer them good advice. In the process, he insures his client's privacy and secrets are protected at a price. As such, he is quite wealthy, but money no longer interests him. Indirectly, through all the secrets he has amassed, both from within and from without the pageant, he is very influential. But influence no longer holds the same allure that it used to and for reasons he doesn't understand, he is immune to the strange muddling of memory that seems to afflict the other members of the pageant. What he seeks now, is to understand and control the supernatural miracles that he sees around him within the pageant, but he keeps this goal carefully concealed and none yet suspect him of being more than he seems to be.

History: Calixto was born in the city of Cordoba in 912. He grew up son of a Christian dhimmi bureaucrat who served the Emir of Córdoba as a tax collector. Thus Calixto grew up working closely with his father as he met with other dhimmis like Jews, other Christians and the Sabians. A smart lad, he quickly learned the language of his masters (Arabic) and that of the city's best traders the Jews (Hebrew) and the Spanish spoken by Christians in Al-Andalus. Calixto was best with numbers and served his father well when he came of age, thus becoming a very efficient tax collector. In the pursuit of his duties, he often had to take possession of valuable items when someone could not afford their taxes in coin and he became adept at determining their worth through study. It was in this regard that he came into close contact with a Sabian family who had come to Cordoba to serve as physicians. When they fell behind in their taxes they offered Calixto a rare book called the Kitāb az-Zīj or Book of Astronomical Tables written by Albategnius (Al-Battani) the Persian.

Relationship with Rambert: Calixto is friendly with Rambert a fellow Spaniard, but is wary of angering the Master of Dreams for obvious reasons. Unlike Rambert, he prefers the company of young men, but doesn't advertise this fact. As very qualified judge of personalities and politics, he sees Rambert's star on the rise and sees an alliance with the oneriomancer as profitable, if not entirely safe. In truth, he rather likes Rambert for his youthful ambitions, but sees his sexual antics as a potential downfall.
