History

Aldous Tope was born in 1490 into an old London house that bred manners as readily as steel; the Tope crest hung over a hearth that paid for tutors, dueling masters, and introductions to courts where fortunes were made by tongue and blade. He learned to fence before he learned to read latin fluently, mastering the rapier in the narrow lanes and grand halls alike until his footwork was as precise as any penned treaty. In 1545, at the height of his worldly ambition and already a veteran of whispered alliances and blood-stained parries, Aldous was turned. Valerius chose him—saw in the aristocratic poise and cold calculation a tool that would slice through centuries. The gift warped little of his surface; it amplified his appetite for power, honed his patience, and rendered moot the petty aches of mortality. He became a political animal—amoral, conniving, but loyal to his Sire Valerius—preferring manipulation to open slaughter and always keeping a blade at hand for those who would not bend.

Through Tudor conspiracies, Puritan purges, Georgian salons, and Victorian parlors, Aldous moved like smoke, buying favors, engineering marriages, and arranging the downfalls of inconvenient men. His loyalties were ledgered: to family where useful, to institutions where advantageous, and above all to Valerius, whose commands outweighed any transient affection. He cultivated secrets the way others cultivated vineyards, and when Valerius decided to attempt Mithras—equal parts mystic rumor and dangerous reality—as he forced Valerius out and installed Lady Anne. against them, Aldous stood with Valerius to snuff that candle. In 1888 Valerius failed; the attempt to kill Mithras unraveled into exposure, emboldened enemies, and a scandal that could not be papered over. To save Valerius's name and their work, and to avoid the city's tightening noose, Aldous was forced to leave London, carrying with him centuries of schemes, a sheath full of knives, and the cold certainty that exile was only another chess move.
