Southern Court / Bulgaria

Sliven, Bulgaria
Location: 300 Km East of Sofia, 100 km west of the Black sea. Slivin sits about half way between the Romainan (Northern) and Turkish (Southern) borders. To the north, the terrain becomes hilly. To the south, the land flattens out. To the west, a number of Peach orchards dominate the countryside.
Climate: Temperate, with hot summers and cold winters.
History: Neolithic settlement began about 6000 years ago. Thracian tribes were conquered by Alexander and integrated into Macedonia before the rise of the Roman Empire. More recently, Slivin was a major cultural center during the Bulgarian National Revival of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Economy: Industrial base. Since the fall of the Wall, the industry has shifted to more agrarian industry (Dairy and wine), in addition to heavier industries (Textiles, and machine parts). A number of commercial resorts sit in the hills north of town.
Notable Hotels: National Palace hotel complex, Hotel Atlantik, Imperia Hotel, Hotel Styote Voyvodi, Hotel Kredo, Hotel Biala Mechka, Hotel Park Central
Places to Shop: The Central Market, located in north west Sliven.
Places of Worship: St. Demetrius Church. Though they exist, houses of worship in Sliven are not the architectural marvels they can be elsewhere in Bulgaria.
