Introduction

An ancient city with a long history, Cagliari has seen the rule of several civilizations. Under the buildings of the modern city there is a continuous stratification of human settlements of about five thousand years, from the Neolithic to today. Historical sites include the prehistoric domus de janas, very damaged by cave activity, a large Carthaginian era necropolis, a Roman era amphitheater, a Byzantine basilica, three Pisan-era towers, a strong system of fortification that made the town the core of the Spanish Habsburg imperial power in the western Mediterranean sea. Its natural resources have always been its sheltered harbor, the oft-powerfully fortified hill of Monti Castru, the modern Casteddu, the salt from its lagoons, and, from inland, the Campidano plain wheat and the Iglesiente mines.

The Death of the City

It was dawn when I and the other first responders arrived. All you could hear was the wind and the surf. No sea-birds, no insects, no people, and no church bells. The silence was deafening. It was as if the metropolitan area of Cagliari were just the prop for a big budget movie. We searched everywhere, we entered houses at random, and public buildings as well, but it was always the same. There were cars in driveways, children's toys strewn about, food left on kitchen tables and half-empty glasses in the taverns of the city. But not a single body did we find; as the day progress more than a few of us began to feel an irrational need to find at least one corpse. One of our number must have slipped over the edge of sanity as the shadows of afternoon began to stretch out, for he entered one of the oldest cemeteries of Cagliari, called Cimitero Monumentale di Bonaria. By the time we found him, he had dug up a dozen graves, both fresh and ancient and his hands were bloody from the labor, but not a single casket held a corpse, not even bones. What in the name of god could have stolen away a half-million living souls and all the bodies of the dead? As the sun began to set each of us was beset by a mad need to flee and I promise you Father, I will never again set foot in that place for something monstrous and unnatural happened there. But, even so, I feel as if I brought something terrible out of that place with me, for in my dreams they, the dead citizens of Cagliari are all watching from the windows of their bedrooms and offices, watching me walk through the salt laden and fog bound streets.
