History
Malachaius was born in 1545 in the worn, mercantile town of Staraya Russa to a family of minor Russian nobility. As the third son he could not expect to inherit lands or title, and his parents sent him to the austere halls of an Eastern Orthodox monastery where his quick mind and restless body found contradictory outlets: hours of silent study and Scripture tempered by rigorous physical labor and the monks\' blunt training in horsemanship and arms. Even as a novice he read faster than his elders, learned Latin and Church Slavonic easily, and could outride most young nobles on the frost-hardened roads. The monastery gave him discipline, but not peace; he carried a curiosity for the world beyond prayer and an athletic impatience that made him ill-suited to a cloistered life.
In 1565, when he was twenty, the Oprichniki descended on Staraya Russa and carried him away from the monastery; whether by chance, by force, or because someone recognized in him the worth of a trained mind and vigorous body, he became one of them. Under the black cloak and mounted on a lean destrier he learned ruthlessness and statecraft as readily as he had learned psalms: covert surveillance, bloody reprisal, the cold calculus of fear as policy. When Ivan disbanded the Oprichniki in 1572 and scattered its men like leaves, Malachaius did not return to the monastery or to his family; he was found, grievous and unmoored, by Elica, a Tzimisce vampire who had watched the upheavals with an age-worn curiosity. Elica bound him in blood—part savior, part captor—and in that binding Malachaius exchanged mortal ties for monstrous servitude. The disciplines of the monk, the brutality of the Oprichniki, and now the uncanny tutelage of a Tzimisce reshaped him into something patient, lithe, and terrible: a man who remembers the warmth of candlelight and the touch of snow, who can read a prayer as easily as he can read a neck, and who serves a cruel art that promises immortality at the price of all the names he once answered to.
