History

Ah, you wish to know what came before? It is good that you are curious. So many newcomers see Zagreb as a frontier town to be conquered and reshaped to suit their own tastes. Sometimes, frontiers have a way of swallowing the colonists, and ancient places have a way of subverting colonists.
History? Why not go to the mortals? The University of Zagreb, I understand has a dozen such "experts," no two of whom agree on much of anything. *hack, cough* Excuse me for a moment...
But I see that you believe you have come to the right place, and desire to be educated about your own kind, the would-be monarchs of the dark times. Well, as a courtesy, I'll sketch the basics for you. More than a few hours, and I'll start to feel that you are trying to take advantage of my generosity...

When outsiders, even mortals, think of the Balkans, the word that inevitably spills past their lips is bloody, and they use that dripping brush to paint Zagreb, here beyond the boarders of that benighted series of hills. But can a history involving those who style themselves the Kindred of Caine ever be described as anything else?
It is commonly assumed that the Balkans are part of the Tzimisces' Carpathian homeland. No one, of course, is more sure of that than the Tzimisce themselves. But Zagreb lies cradled between the Pyrenee and the Balkan mountain ranges, and far to the south of Carpathia. In truth, the Ancient Balkans lay between the centers of power of several Clans. The Tzimisce to the North and East met the Brujah of Hellas to the South, and then the Ventrue and Madmen of Rome, invading from the West. Nameless Gangrel Warlords resisted the encroachment of civilization, and Malkavians and Toreador struggled to add their own unique fingerprints to the mix.

Tzimisce warlords sent their childer to colonize the region in the wake of the Gothic invasion. Various Ventrue Princlings and representatives of the Trinity in Constantinople contested their arrogance. As the Slavs over-ran the region, their Tzimisce overlords gained the upper hand. The Ventrue returned centuries later riding the coat tails of their Hapsburg cronies. Some of the most overt fighting of the Anarch Revolt took place in the Balkans, as the elders pitted their loyal childer against the rebellious ones, with empty Princedoms the prize.

By the 18th century, Zagreb was under the control of the Ventrue elder Anderik and his large brood, along with a handful of seemingly loyal allies. They weathered many Sabbat sieges and assaults by jealous Viovodes. The did not survive the rise of the Brujah Council. The Ventrue held, and died to a man in the face of Communism, but their Tzimisce rivals have always been stubborn and crafty. They retreated into their mountain strongholds to the west, weathering purge after purge, while both Sabbat and Camarilla retreated to safer climes.

With the fall of Communism, the Sabbat struck first. Sympathizers among the Brujah staged their own Anarch Revolt and helped the Sabbat kill and diablerize their elders. The human isolationism and bigotry spawned by the wars that broke the Bolsheviks' fiction of a united Yugoslavia were the perfect breeding ground for new monsters to add to the ranks of the Black Hand.

And now, since 2007, the Toreador Adeline has purged the city of that rabble. How that was done involves interesting and potentially dangerous information that will cost you far more than will this idle gossip, that is sure. This is not to say that either the Tzimisce or the Sabbat have abandoned their desire for our little jewel among all this chaotic filth.

So, are you planning to stay, and carve a piece of the frontier out for yourself, or do you plan to return to the safe parts of the world, and kowtow to your elders for another few centuries?
