Abandoned at the convent steps and wrapped in a scrap of coarse linen, Archibald Garfolo learned the scriptures before he learned to ask for what he wanted. The nuns taught him to read, to write, and to teach, shaping his young mind with Latin prayers and the brittle catechisms of a world that had little use for a foundling. The convent kept him safe from starvation but not from the darker human needs inside its walls; he bore the weight of cold nights and hands that betrayed their vows. He chose the name Garfolo from the Italian garofano—carnation—because even a name could be a small, defiant blossom. Catholicism gave him language and ritual, and the discipline of the cloister gave him patience; both would later be a strange shield for the life he was dragged into.
In 1780, in a hail of iron and blood, he was taken in a Sabbat mass embrace: dozens of mouths, a choir of hunger, and a covenant that turned the convent's quiet into a crucible. The transformation honed what the nuns had taught him into a predatory intellect—literate, eloquent, and unforgiving. He proved his worth on distant battlefields, in the stepped blood of Kiev and the fog-bound streets of Leeds, where he learned to command men and monsters alike. Centuries of violence and piety braided together until he became more than a survivor; he became a magistrate of the night, feared and obeyed, the most powerful Sabbat vampire in Leeds.
