Ciprian Tordai was born into a family whose hearth belonged to strangers with cold eyes: an old line of landowners in a fogged Transylvanian valley, their fortunes quietly pledged to vampires who preferred manners and debts to overt terror. From childhood he was fed as much with lessons as with food—good tutors arrived at dawn to teach foreign tongues, law, and the arcane etiquette of aristocratic subservience, while stern veterans taught him to shoot, to mend bone in winter, and to read faces the way others read books. The vampire patrons had a slow, surgical way of shaping men; Ciprian learned to swallow empathy and let only necessary cruelty grow. He was taught that life could be measured in returns and leverage, that weakness was a ledger entry that endangered everyone, and that loyalty to the family meant a cold, efficient kind of love. Those years made him precise, hardened, and terrifyingly patient.

When the Tzimisce demanded a human instrument with more worldly teeth, Ciprian answered the summons by slipping into the Russian mafia: a pragmatic marriage of brutality and bureaucracy. He trafficked in secrets, orchestrated debt collections with surgical timing, and served as a translator between the monstrous politics of elder vampires and the messy will of mortal henchmen. The Tzimisce taught him subtle cruelties—anatomical metaphors, the artistry of reshaping flesh—and in return he offered discretion and a conscience that could still be used as a scalpel. Over time what began as duty became curiosity; he found himself lingering over questions the tutors never asked aloud: what is the weight of a human soul when measured against a vampiric hunger? Could the same hand that carved a name into a ledger also discern the echo of a life in a scream? Now he walks cities with the poise of a man who has been remade, fascinated not by power for its own sake but by the space between predator and prey, where the human and vampire soul are knotted together and perhaps, he thinks, still salvageable.
