Herbert Northrop was born in 1848 to indigent Irish parents who worked as domestic servants in the household of a family of English gentry. Herbie went to a prestigious millitary school at the cost of his gentile godparents. And attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for four years before taking his commission.
The next thirthy-five years of Herbie's life was spent on the battlefields of the Empire beginning with the British expedition to Abyssinia (1867–1868) and ended it with the Second Boer War (1899–1902).
