It seems more likely that the caster's new second shadow would be attracted to the target's shadow, not the target himself. While this would seem to have little actual game effect, it does allow a person being so tracked to avoid detection by casting no shadow - being in a completely dark room is the obvious means. Similar first level tracking rituals have similar means of avoiding them - Illuminate the Trail of Prey can be broken with water, for instance. The Lengthening Shadow would not be broken, only suspended: If the target emerged from darkness before the ritual expired, the caster's second shadow would again spring into existence.
I'm not sure how natural shadows cast by the same light can intersect at right angles. What do you mean by this?

Firstly, the 'second' shadow only manifests if you botch. Normally, there is just one shadow that is pointing anywhere, but if you botch, you manifest a second shadow. And that shadow points to who ever you are looking at, at that moment.
Second, I think your right, the mystic's shadow is attuned to the shadow of the target, not to the target specifically. And your point about what would interfere with the ritual, total darkness, makes perfect sense. So, I will update it.
I don't believe I ever said "natural" shadows would intersect at right angles. Rather, that the mystic must use Obtenebration 1 to manipulate his shadow into intersecting with the target's shadow at right angles. It doesn't have to be natural at all.

Ah: I completely misunderstood the second sentence of that paragraph. Mea culpa. Only one shadow unless there is a botch. Similarly, I missed the part about the shadow being manipulated with the foundational level (Shadow Play) of Obtenebration. Given that, I think that we are in agreement.
