Description: Though the origins of this ritual are shrouded in the antiquity of the Medieval Era, a similar ritual was mentioned in the early witch trials of fifteenth century Germany. When cast correctly, the ritual causes a stationary cloud of magical darkness to envelope an area of one cubic yard; the magical darkness is blinding to mortals and may even cause sight related difficulties for supernaturals. The ritual is most often used to obscure an individual for a few seconds or create a distraction, though it can certainly be used to entertain just as easily. The sudden appearance of a cloud of magical darkness can be considered a breach of the Masquerade, but the main component, a dust made from Jet (lignite) is always left behind and is often used to explain away the supernatural as mortal trickery.

Ingredients: Ground Jet (lignite) and a Willpower expenditure
Casting: The caster chants a quick invocation of the powers of darkness in Medieval Latin and throws the Jet dust where he wants the effect to take place.
System: Intelligence + Rituals = difficulty four (4) for an in-clan caster or five (5) for an out of clan caster and the expenditure of a temporary Willpower point. The expenditure of willpower allows the ritual to be cast in one action, permitting it to be used in combat situations. Successes must be divided between the clouds dimensions (measured in cubic yards) and the number of combat rounds (a period of six seconds) it will exist; the exact shape of the cloud is determined by the casters will. The cloud blinds mortals for its duration (+4 penalty to all sight related actions), those supernaturals without superior sight are likewise affected, awakened beings with enhanced sight suffer a degree of difficulty with perception (+1 penalty to all sight related actions, including spell casting); the caster is of course, immune to the effects of the ritual and can see normally. The caster's throw is limited to melee range, about two yards.
