Nikomedes was born in the decades leading up to the Trojan War. His father was
the war-god Ares and his mother Aglaea the mortal queen of the island kingdom
of Symi. Nikomedes was stepson to King Charopus and half-brother to Nireus who
would inherit the throne of Symi just as the Trojan War erupted over the kidnapping
of Menelaus' bride to be Helen by Paris of Troy.
As Nireus had been a suitor of Helen before Menelaus, and the most handsome of the
Achaeans after Achilles, the new king joined the war for Helen and Nikomedes ever a
loyal brother joined him in pursuit of the stolen queen of Sparta. Nireus and Nikomedes
had many adventures before they reached the shores of Troy, most notable and unfortunate
was a conflict with the Mysian king Telephus, which occurred on the way to Troy in which
Nireus killed Telephus' Amazon wife Hiera, who fought from from the back of a chariot.
In truth it was Nikomedes who slew the Mysian queen, not Nireus who failed to excel in
war-craft, but as King of Symi Nireus claimed the kill as his own and earned the fatal
enmity of Eurypylus son of King Telephus for the murder of his mother.
After the death of Nireus at the hands of the Mysian prince Eurypylus, Nikomedes
