New Bulgarian University
The New Bulgarian University (NBU) was founded on September 18th, 1991 by Bogdan Bogdanov and a group of Bulgarian intellectuals with a resolution by Bulgarian Parliament. Their goal was to create a modern institution which would preserve Bulgarian traditions. 2,500 students were welcomed during the first year. By 2004, it had 7,551 students, and 3,201 alumni. It is considered the finest business school in Bulgaria.
In 2005, it began to take radically bold steps to expand its science and high tech programs. With private donation, it annexed land just to the east of its campus and built a state-of-the-art building dedicated to teaching of and research into physics, chemistry and biology. After a few delays, the building was completed in 2008, though parts were ready and the first classes began in fall 2007. Other projects include the re-modeling of a nearby apartment building by a student-parent campus organization, a large underground parking garage, and a re-development and consolidation of a "Greek Row" in the area south and east of campus.
In 2011, the campus formed a partnership with the near-by State Center for Prosthesis and Rehabilitation, and the new hospital near the border with Fakulteta, to begin developing a medical curriculum.
The campus' neighbors include the local police station, the Sofia City Investigation Service immediately south of campus, the Sestri Evharistinki monastery immediately south of that, IFAG (a French language business school) to the southwest, the Alexander Fleming School (151st Sofia High School) to the west, and the Buzema professional High School of Agriculture catercorner to the northeast.
