Neevaeh O'Hara was born a slave on Shelby Plantation a few miles from Cairo, Georgia in 1833. Life on the Shelby Plantation was far from idyllic, yet it was better than the lot of black-slaves on surrounding holdings.
Unfortunately in 1849 Master Shelby fell into debt and made known his intention to clear that debt by selling some of his human property at the next Cairo auction. News of this kind spread like wildfire among the African chattel and it was well known that in auction the best prices came from young men and women especially the strong and attractive.
This state of affairs triggered an exodus of youthful black servants and laborers. The following night a dozen young-slaves fled into the night in different directions in the hope of thwarting pursuit and capture.
Only Neevaeh and two others who fled south into the Florida swamps successfully evaded the slave-hunters. Their journey westward from the swamps of Florida to coastlines of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana was a harrowing one plagued by hunger, sleepless nights, exposure and pursuit. Months later the trio found themselves in New Orleans and lost themselves among the free people of color who crowded the filthy streets.
During their months long sojourn Neevaeh had become the leader of the little band of runaways due in part to her quick Wits and an inordinate strength of will. So upon arrival in New Orleans it was Neevaeh who decided their next step which was to bargain with a ships captain bound for San Francisco. All of the runaways had heard the tales of wealth spread through the streets of the French Quarter and Neevaeh figured San Francisco was about as far from Georgia as the Moon was from Earth.
