Introduction

The University Institute in mental health Québec (formerly the Centre hospitalier Robert-Giffard) is a psychiatric hospital in Quebec offering specialized services to adults with mental illness or mental disorders. It is affiliated with the Université Laval.

The hotel was named after Robert Giffard, Beauport founder and pioneer of medicine in New France. It is located on the road to Canardière in the borough of Beauport in Quebec City.

History

  • -- 15 September 1845 - Opening of the first psychiatric facility in Quebec, the provisional Beauport Asylum.
  • -- 1850 - The establishment grows and becomes the Quebec Lunatic Asylum.
  • -- 1865 - The establishment changes name again and becomes Lunatic Asylum Quebec.
  • -- 1875 - On the night of January 29 to 30, a fire destroyed the women's wing. 7 bodies were found but 19 others missing.
  • -- 1893 - The government entrusted the care, custody and maintenance of the patients from the asylum to the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Quebec.
  • -- 1912 - Asylum Lunatic Asylum Quebec became Saint Michael the Archangel.
  • -- 1914 - The asylum becomes Hôpital Saint-Michel-Archange; a university education is practiced.
  • -- 1976 - The hospital was renamed Robert-Giffard Hospital.
  • -- 1997 - The government takes possession of the property administered by the Sisters of Charity of Quebec for over 100 years.
  • -- 2009 - The establishment officially became the University Institute in Mental Health of Quebec.
