History: Gilles de Rais, born around 1405 in Champtocé-sur-Loire, Anjou, was a French nobleman, knight, and military leader. He served as a Marshal of France and fought alongside Joan of Arc during the Hundred Years' War. After Joan of Arc's execution, Gilles de Rais retreated to his estates and was later accused of the abduction, torture, and murder of numerous children, with estimates of victims ranging from 30 to over 150. He was tried and convicted in 1440, sentenced to death by hanging, and his body was partially burned at the stake. Gilles de Rais is remembered as one of history's most notorious serial killers and a figure of medieval legend.
