Paris - La Belle Époque

The Caserne de Reuilly (Reuilly Barracks) in Paris was a prominent military installation in 1900, housing troops and serving a key role for the French military. Located in the 12th arrondissement, the barracks were a significant part of the urban landscape.

Life at the barracks in 1900

At the turn of the 20th century, the barracks were an active military site. A stereoscopic photograph from the era shows American troops stationed there during World War I. It's likely that a mix of French and, eventually, Allied forces would have passed through its doors.

While an ordinary military facility, the barracks were also featured in early photographic and documentary collections. For example, a glass slide from Harvard's collections shows American soldiers at the barracks in 1918.

Later history and transformation

The barracks were eventually decommissioned and later repurposed for residential and other uses. By the early 21st century, the site had been redeveloped into a new residential and community space. Modern architecture now coexists with the original, more austere barracks buildings, with some of the original stone preserved.
