Novel 1920's New Orleans

Hong Chen.jpg

Sobriquet: Hong

Appearance: Hong is a dapper man of 30 with dark black hair and dark brown eyes. He normally dresses in turn of the century business suits, but on special occasions can be found in full Chinese traditional wear.

History: Hong Chen came to America in the 1840's as a young boy. He stayed and worked in the opium den his family ran. Afraid he would get stuck doing the same thing his whole life Hong ran away one night. He boarded a ship in San Francisco and spent the next two years sailing the ocean with the "California Queen". The ship made the perilous journey around the Cape and eventually sailed into New Orleans harbor. Hong took his pay and left the ship there. For the next five years he wandered the American landscape, finding work where he could. He took up working on the transcontinental railroad and was appalled by the working conditions forced on his people. He tried more than once to rally the workers to strike and demand better wages and housing. This crossed the plans of Flaevius Nellson who had the Chinaman brought to him. After a long conversation Flavius embraced Hong. Hong stayed with his sire for 15 years, before once more running away. He returned to New Orleans dreaming of getting back on a ship. After being in the city for several years he consigned himself to the idea that he would never return to the sea. Shortly thereafter he set up an opium den, and has been a fixture of the city ever since.
