Quote

"Beyond the River of the Blessed, there we sat down, yea, we"
"wept, when we remembered Avalon. Our swords were shattered"
"in our hands and we hung our shields on the oak tree. The silver"
"towers were fallen, into a sea of blood. How many miles to Avalon?"
"None, I say, and all. The silver towers are fallen."
"…waters, where the stars shone like bonfires at night and the green of"
"day was always the green of spring. Youth, love, beauty-I knew them in"
"Avalon. Proud steeds, bright metal, soft lips, dark ale. Honor…"

The Doom of Caer Ludein

The "Doom of Caer Ludein", or more simply "The Doom" is a refrain that is on every citizen's lips, from the lowliest of street urchins to the highborn ministers of state. Despite this, of those thousands who give voice to this refrain numerous times each and every day, of these many recitations none save one knows its meaning. The "Doom" is a mystery that brought an end to a kingdom and its capital city, and yet, no-one knows precisely how or why the great Caer Ludein was brought low. No one remembers the end of the great city or how they came to this new island refuge of Ne'Avalon. What the people do know is that Morgante saved them from "The Doom" and that she brought them to this new city with an armada of ships.

Morgante the Savior

Who is Morgante? No one really knows. Her ministers fear and respect her as a sovereign. Her servants adore her and worship her for her miraculous abilities. The nobles and merchants of the city plot and scheme to earn her favor. And the common people bow down at her approach and hope for even a glance at her majesty. The only thing every single citizen does know about Morgante is that she saved the people from the "Doom" and found for them a new home here in Ne'Avalon.

The City of Refuge

The Isle of Avalon rises from the River Cocytus, the River of Lamentations that runs down to the Sea of Tears. The Isle is roughly two miles long and a mile wide. At either end are natural harbors that grant shelter from the wild surges of the river and from the terrible storms that flow from the sea. Near the center of the isle is a high flat topped tor that might once have been a mountain. From this defensible position, Lady Morgante has established her palace and from which the city of Ne'Avalon is slowly growing up around it.

Between the two harbors are beaches, jungle, foothills and the city which commands the heights.

A defensive wall of native stone has already been built around the Palace of Morgante. Between the wall and the palace, the rest of the city is slowly taking shape. There are a few landmarks already: the Marketplace, the Palace, an expensive inn called the Queen's Head, a large if tawdry tavern called the Dancing Pig, the City Wall with its three gates and the slum of Coppergate.

The Unasked Question

There is a question that gnaws at every heart in Ne'Avalon. None will speak of it even to their closest companions or most trusted allies. Few will even ask the question of themselves in the privacy of their homes in the dark of night. The question is simple, but the repercussions are anything but, and so the question goes unspoken even as it plagues every Avalonian citizen.

The question is: did we survive?

The question remains unasked because the entire population of the city, to one degree or another, remains in a state of shock over their collective deaths. The population remains consciously unaware of their deceased state and the location of their new sanctuary. The population as a whole are in a state of chaos for they are refugees who have escaped a disaster so epic that they can scarcely imagine it. Primarily they cling to the mundane routines of their former lives as a bulwark against their collective terror. Like living refuges they scrabble for the daily necessities of food, shelter, and warmth while they fret over the possible fate of lost loved ones and their new difficulties. The most willful struggle to elevate themselves in a society turned upside-down.
