Jamie's Esoterica

Level 1 Thaumaturgy, based on Strictly Hermetic Principles

This simple ritual allows the caster to detect the presence of nearby wards.

For the purposes of this and related rituals, the term 'ward' refers to any magic set and designed to be activated at a later date by a specific event. In cannon, most such magics are designed to punish and prevent contact with a protected object, or prevent movement by a specific type of being through a specific area. However, this ritual reaches beyond this clumsy definition. Deflection of Wooden Doom qualifies for this ritual. Level 2 and 4 of the Path of Warding do not (they are continuous magic that produce glyphs that can be seen through). Milan's Icon ritual certainly qualifies.

System: By chanting words of power under his breath for a full minute, the caster attunes himself to the ambient nature of his surroundings in a radius of ten feet. Once complete, the caster becomes aware of any hanging magics with a perception + occult roll at a difficulty of 10 minus the level of each ward. (more powerful magic is easier to detect). Each success beyond the first doubles the radius of the ritual. The ritual lasts until the caster moves.

The Beginning of the Ward-breaking series.

Why level 1: This ritual is only a level one because it affects only the caster's senses, and leaves no record nor makes any changes to the world. The caster receives a benefit only so long as he remains motionless. Do you disagree?
