The origins of the Plague of Serenity are dubious, and to be sure probably only patient zero knows it's true origins. What is known of the disease is that it seems blood born in nature, and fatal. Supernatural creatures seem immune.

Germination from point of contact to fatality seems to vary. At the completion of the plague, the plague victims die and creatures explode from the corpse, expelling three or four plague creatures. These creatures appear to the naked eye to closely resemble horseshoe crabs.

The initial point of contact seems to be Rome, though it is moving rapidly among the ports and along the major trade routs.
