History: Tom was born into a Polish immigrant family who had moved to Detroit around the turn of the twentieth century. His father was a butcher by trade and opened a shop under the family name. Tom was thirty years old when the United States of America entered World War II with the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. Tom immediately volunteered and joined the army, while he likes to brag that it was his patriotic duty, he was really escaping a difficult marriage, too many kids and a boring life behind the counter at his father's butcher shop. Tom reckoned that if he was going to get blood on his hands, he should get paid for it and see the world along the way. He left Detroit and his family and never looked back.
