In life, Tobias was a member of the Levelers, a heresy that believed that all people were the same in the eyes of God, and therefore society should be "leveled." He does not remember being embraced during the Crown's brutal crackdown on his fellows. He was suddenly a vampire, alone in the world, learning the hard way the perils of sunlight, the need for blood, the danger posed by others of his own kind. Until he met Catherine and Snee, and the three became the Foundlings; outcasts with no one but one another.

Even centuries later, he is still true to his proletarian roots, fighting against what he perceives to be illegitimate authority, both in the mortal world and now among the Sabbat. Of the Foundlings, he is the only one with something to live for besides the group itself. However, all others are a distant second to his bond with and duty to his family.
