World of Darkness -- Pax Romana

Quote

"Veni vidi vici."
("I came, I saw, I conquered.")

Sobriquet

Appearance

After Caesar's first death and return to the mortal world he appears as a young man with blond hair and a muscular build. Unlike most Romans who are clean-shaven and have short hair, he has long hair and a beard, remnants of a former campaign which he wears to look more barbaric (after being dead for fifty years, there are few in Rome who would recognize Caesar, but there are a few and the former Imperator has been warned to keep a low profile - an order he will follow to the letter despite his hatred of it). He is first seen in a simple robe, but later wears the armor of a Roman officer. Before his ascension to Olympus, Caesar trims his hair down as well as finally shaving off his beard, in order to appear more like a proper Roman Soldier.

Behavior

Caesar is a complex character with various underlying traits, a brilliant but wild man. The former Imperator will not hesitate to assault the servants of his enemies or to execute a soldier he considers a coward. While hot-headed and ill-tempered at inconvenient moments, Caesar is considerably calculative with his machinations, and carries an impeccable charm. For all his wit and cleverness with words, is nickname is Silver Tongue, whose ability to speak to, deceive, and manipulate his opponents is legendary. Caesar's capacity for cleverness is only matched by his boundless ambitions, such as a ferocious appetite for wine and whores, as well as strong desires for political greatness.

Despite being a hardened soldier with an appearance of arrogance and violence, Caesar proves himself to be empathetic towards others in need, and does not like the sight of other Romans, particularly women, in pain. Despite his ambition, he is also very patriotic and cares deeply for the well being of Rome and its people. Caesar respects warriors of great skill, even his own enemies, and never underestimates who he might come up against. However, Caesar's swaggering behavior and arrogance also provokes the ire of others around him, but his dauntless courage does not allow him to back down from any challenge, and his brash boldness even encourages it.

History

Living from July 100 BC to March 15th, 44 BC, Caesar was a Roman general, statesman, Consul and notable author of Latin prose. He played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. In 60 BC, Caesar, Crassus and Pompey formed a political alliance that was to dominate Roman politics for several years. He was made governor of lower Gaul in 58 BC and as such commanded four legions. Seeking wealth and glory, Caesar used these legions to begin a conquest of the entirety of Gaul. Caesar's conquest of Gaul, completed by 51 BC, extended Rome's territory to the English Channel and the Rhine. During his many victories over the peoples that make up modern day France, Belgium, and Germany, Caesar proved that he possessed a genius for military strategy.

With the Gallic Wars concluded, the Senate, fearing that he had become too powerful, ordered Caesar to lay down his military command and return to Rome. Caesar refused, and marked his defiance in 49 BC by crossing the Rubicon with a legion, leaving his province and illegally entering Roman territory under arms. Civil war resulted, from which he emerged as the unrivaled leader of Rome following victories against Pompey and Cato the Younger, among others.

After assuming control of the Roman government, Caesar began a program of social and governmental reforms, including the creation of the Julian calendar. He centralized the bureaucracy of the Republic and was eventually proclaimed Dictator Perpetuus or "dictator in perpetuity" i.e. dictator for life. But the underlying political conflicts had not been resolved, and on the Ides of March (15 March) 44 BC, Caesar was assassinated by a group of senators led by Marcus Junius Brutus, a supposed close friend. A new series of civil wars broke out, and the constitutional government of the Republic was never restored. Caesar's adopted heir Octavian, later known as Augustus, rose to sole power, and the era of the Roman Empire began.

Much of Caesar's life is known from his own accounts of his military campaigns, and from other contemporary sources, mainly the letters and speeches of Cicero and the historical writings of Sallust. The later biographies of Caesar by Suetonius and Plutarch are also major sources. Caesar is deemed to be one of the greatest military commanders in history.
