The Auction house was bought in 1854 by Arthur David Chalmers.  Mr. Chalmers was a painter and had dealings with the rare artifacts and items being sold commonly in the world.  His family were in shipping and raw products.  In 1865 Arthur died of malaria.  His son Prodigal Chalmers took over and expanded the trade to include items coming in the Mediterranean sea and the Orient. Prodigal controlled things until 1895 when Henry Thomas Chalmers took over. Henry is the second son of Prodigal and Winnifred Chalmers.  Prodigal died in 1900 of a fall down some stairs.
