Background
The meaning behind the name of the coven called 'Canto XIII' lies in Dante Alighieri's Inferno. The Inferno was the first of three books that comprised the elegant Italian's 'Divine Comedy'. Canto XIII is a reference to the seventh circle of hell wherein the sin of violence was punished. In Dante's cosmology, the seventh circle of hell had two parts called rings. The first ring was a place for those who committed violence against their neighbors, while the second ring was a place called the 'Wood of Suicides', wherein those who committed violence against themselves were punished by being turned into monstrous trees who suffered eternally. Thus, Canto XIII is a coven of suicides, those Embraced shortly after taking their own lives. The coven is quite new, having only been formed in 2001 by the Harbinger of Skulls known as 'The Penitent'. The coven is a loose collection of equals with a similar interest in death.
