- Gargoyles -x- New York City -x- Quebec City
Appearance: Seemingly carved from mottled stone, Verbruch looks every bit the hideous monster he was intended to be. His -- and it is only with regard to his past that a gendered pronoun is used at all -- body is angular even among Gargoyles. While most are somewhat smooth, Verbruch's is a rough collection of bulging planes and sharp edges. His eyes are darkened pits. Horns like those of a ram protrude from the crest of his head, tapering to points beneath his stony jaw.
Behavior: From Verbruch's point of view, following the commands of the Tremere is a purposeful existence, bunt not a fulfilling one. They direct Verbruch with notions that he does not understand -- "treachery," "concern," "possible malfeasance" -- but that nonetheless cause him a tingle somewhere in the back of his mind. It is possible that he knew these ideas once, but for now they are no more than words. Perhaps the Tremere cut out these parts when they made him. That would have been wise.
History: Created in the laboratories of a neglected Tremere chantry somewhere in the Carpathian Mountains, Verbruch knows typically little of his life or unlife before becoming a Gargoyle. He remembers fearing the strange castle on the rock, but he does not know any of the specifics regarding it.
Verbruch was created for the purposes of fighting the Tzimisce, part of an undying, provincial war between the Tremere and the Fiends that has been all but forgotten by the rest of the world. When the Tremere were planning their contribution to the Battle of New York, they specifically requisitioned Verbruch from Transylvania for his experience with the Tzimisce. The Gargoyle did not perform as well as expected, which insightful Tremere attribute to the difference in landscape and tactics between New York and the Old World, but numerous Fiends fell before his stony claws.
Within a few years, Verbruch had been forgotten himself, an overlooked resource left unaccounted for in the political scrambling that characterizes New York. Only one Tremere even recalled that Verbruch was still in the city and had not been shipped back to the Carpathians -- a quartermaster at the Jewish Museum chantry. That Tremere gave Verbruch orders to watch the Maupassant Room and to keep detailed descriptions of the guests it received. Obviously, that quartermaster did not trust Estevez and wanted to keep a secret record of exactly whom the traitor-regent was consorting with.
Perhaps luckily for Verbruch, he was caught by Eugenio Estevez a few months into the spy mission and after a thorough interrogation, the Regent of the Maupassant Room requisitioned Verbruch for his personal bodyguard. The quartermaster of the Jewish Museum chantry, was transferred to the very same obscure chantry in Carpathia that spawn the gargoyle, at Estevez's request. Verbruch was given the opportunity to deliver that choice piece of intelligence to the former quartermaster and the gargoyle laughs about that to this very night.
Recent Events: The master received a letter early one night and then suddenly the chantry was in a commotion as everything useful was packed up by the apprentices and ghouls. That very night, the Master, his new apprentice and Verbruch took a train to a new city called Quebec. Based on this experience, Verbruch has decided that he likes...trains.
