The George Inn of Southwark is one of the most historic pubs in Britain. Established in the medieval period, The George Inn went on to become one of the most famous coaching inns during the era of Charles Dickens. Indeed Dickens referenced The George Inn in his 1850s novel, Little Dorrit. The pub has even older literary connections, with William Shakespeare amongst its esteemed clientele, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre being located nearby.

The George Inn has become one of the most popular London attractions with literary buffs as well as those tourists that have a passion for historic, elegant buildings. The pub is so well valued that it is now owned by the National Trust, while continuing to run as a functioning pub.

The George Inn is Grade I listed by English Heritage in recognition of its historic and aesthetic standing. A visit here is a great option for those tourists wishing to enjoy an atmospheric pint after a visit to one of Southwark's many tourist attractions.
