He grew up the youngest son of a Irish criminal family. But Garvan loved his mother, God, Fionnuala MacCoughlan, drinking good whisky and barefisted boxing. Of the five things he loved most, one, Fionnuala MacCoughlan got him in the kind of trouble only the Army can save you from. So he joined up to fight Commy Gooks rather than Fionnuala's father and brothers. He looked after his fire-team until the fateful night that Rifle Platoon AC23 walked into a Vietcong ambush that killed everyone but Medic Tremen Hall. That Hall took a head wound in the first seconds of the ambush, only meant that he would survive what killed the rest of them. Sergeant Tom figures that if Hall had to eat his hide to survive, well, Tom didn't need it anymore; but for some reason its as if some part of Tom is still inside Hall because he can point in the dark towards his medic, regardless of where the mad doctor might be.<br>
