Once she stood in a single unbroken wood whose trunks remembered the sea, but the city gnawed at the edges and the trees shrank into patchwork parkland and river fringes. An iron ring hammered into root and stone pinned her to the parks' boundaries; a scarlet bargain sealed with her own blood consecrated her duty: keep the plant life healthy, weave sap and root into resilience, and answer when the green calls. Moderately powerful, she can quicken a sapling into stubborn survival, whisper to roots to unbind from concrete, and call up a blossom where a council worker insists there will be only gravel—but she cannot conjure a forest from a kerbside bed nor turn a building back into a birchwood.

			Time has given her both patience and a prickly melancholy. She prefers women—soft hands on bark, laughter that sounds like wind through leaves—and has kept lovers whose names the moths forget; she has also bedded men when the Cycle demanded seed or ritual completion, trading warmth for the continuity the old laws require. Her plants live because she owes the River Queen: a debt of water, tributary favors, and a promise to carry messages along the channels the river remembers. In return, the River Queen feeds her roots in dry summers and steals back a favor now and then, leaving a slick of moonlight on the ponds as payment. Neylida walks the parks at dawn, a shawl of ivy, listening to the gas lamps clink and the distant trains, tending sapling and rose alike, forever diplomancing between trees and council, longing and oath, holding the last green in a city that keeps trying to fence it away.
