He had spent nearly twenty years at war and had seen the atrocities that men perpetrated on the vanquished and on the hapless civilians left vulnerable after a battle. Not only had he witnessed them, but he had been the culprit, for after a victory the legionaries were often given leave to sack and despoil a village, town or tribe. Of his own experience Septimus knew the kinds of things drunken soldiers did after a battle and it had never made him wonder about evil.		Was there such a thing as evil?
