He was embraced in 1700 by an enigmatic patron whose hunger was matched only by an eye for talent; immortality gave Michel the time to perfect his craft and the distance to treat human frailty as a study rather than an affront. He retained the airs of a middle-aged man by choice and by design: too practiced to be shocked, too civil to be cruel, and always composed in the face of small disasters and great upheavals alike.

			For two centuries he has been the knife's edge between drawing-room politeness and actual danger. As butler to Lady Anne, he is both a shadow and a scaffold—keeping the household immaculate, the ledger unblemished, and the reputations discreetly mended. Loyalty to Lady Anne is not superstition for him but an oath renewed daily: he serves to protect her power, to keep the salons hospitable and the corridors secure, and to ensure that whatever the century brings, her name will be carried forward under the same immaculate hand.
