			Mary Carr (1862–1924) was a real historical figure known as the leader of the Forty Elephants, a notorious all-female criminal gang in Victorian London. Born in 1862, she began her criminal career at a young age, reportedly convicted of shoplifting at 14. In 1890, she was elected Queen of the Forty Elephants, a position she held until 1896. She led the gang in high-profile robberies targeting luxury shops like Harrods, using deception—often exploiting Victorian-era perceptions of female innocence—to distract clerks while her gang members stole goods hidden in their clothing.

			Her leadership was challenged after she was convicted of kidnapping a child in 1896 and sentenced to three years in prison. While incarcerated, another gang member, Alice Diamond, took over as queen, leading the Forty Elephants to even greater notoriety. After her release in 1899, Carr was arrested again in 1900 for possessing stolen goods and had further run-ins with the law, including a robbery in 1909. She largely faded from public records after that and is believed to have died around 1924.
