It is not that Hagen is stupid, far from it, rather that without the correct upbringing, the Knight of Tronege is a fish out of water. While he does successfully observe the basics of courtly etiquette and intrigue, he does so without style or flare and he is often the butt of aristocratic amusement. It does not help that by nature Hagen is a lackey who needs to attach himself to someone strong, and the stronger the better. Despite this fact, Hagen is not a coward or a fool. He knows his own value and capabilities and when he falls short, which is often, he seek to ride the coat-tails of those more capable and powerful than himself.
