Introduction

Jigoku, in Japanese Buddhism, or hell, is a region popularly believed to be composed of a number of hot and cold regions located under the Earth. It is a place of suffering and humiliation wherein the Makuragi ("Those who sleep in hell") must suffer during their daytime slumber. It is also the dread realm from which they draw their hellish discipline thus making it equally the source of their power and suffering.

Infernal Voice

The Makuragi otherwise known as "Those who sleep in hell" may project their Koe or infernal-voice through the realm of Jigoku to another Makuragi or to a stranger. The Infernal Voice comes to the recipient amidst howls of anguish and screams of fear, in the background can be heard the roar of a forest fire or the raging winds of an arctic blizzard. Those especially gifted with supernatural senses can sometimes hear the Makuragi communicating with the Infernal Voice, but they are often difficult to understand over the cacophony of hell. In modern times it has been possible for recordings to be made and clarified via sound filtration and digital reconstruction.

It is easy enough for a Sleeper to channel his voice through hell to another of the bloodline regardless of the distance between them. It is much harder to speak to a complete stranger or even someone familiar but unrelated to the bloodline, in the case of the former the Sleeper must be able to see the individual, in the circumstance of the former familiarity makes it possible but still difficult. Those unfamiliar with the Infernal Voice often find themselves disoriented with nausea or headache, but these symptoms do not persist for more than a few minutes for supernatural creatures or hours in the case of mortals.

System: Wits + Empathy = Difficulty 4 for other Makuragi. For strangers line-of-sight is a necessity, the difficulty is 6, and a blood-point must be spent. Even so, successes equal the number of turns communication is possible with five or more equaling a full scene. Communication with someone familiar still requires the expenditure of a blood-point, a difficult of six, and the ratio of successes still apply, but successes can be expended to increase the distance of successful communication. Unknown to all but members of the bloodline ghouls count as Makuragi because of their bond require neither dice roll or blood expenditure.
