Simon Magus.jpg

Sobriquet: Simon Magus or The Thaumturge

Appearance: In contrast to his legend, Simon Magus isn't particularly tall or imposing. Rather a small man in both height and weight, he is spare and wiry, giving the impression of speed and agility. This impression is correct, for Simon reacts to threats and opportunities with lightening speed. His supple hands are longer and more flexible than most men due to an extra knuckle on each finger and giving every gesture grace and alien fluidity. Simon's face is long and broad with a receding hairline that gives him a monastic appearance. He habitually wears simple brown robes, sandals and swathes his features with a plain brown prayer shawl. Around his waist he wears a tooled leather belt to which he attaches his implements of magic, including numerous leather pouches, ritual blades and a strange ivory amphora.

Behavior: The Thaumaturge is a consummate entertainer, while performing he rarely speaks except to make to make enigmatic pronouncements to punctuate his routine. Simon possesses the strange ability to hold the gazes of all whose eyes he meets. There is about the man, a strange feverishness that suggests madness or possession. Simon is best described as deliberate, every action is carefully considered and his self possession is nearly unshakable, but there are times when his gaze become hungry and at such times his self control seems fleeting.

History: Mordblund was born under a now forgotten name in the early years of tenth century Denmark. Found as a child by a master of the Order of Hermes called Etrius, he was inducted into the House of Tremere in 928. He was raised to master under Etrius at the convocation of House Tremere during the consigning of the new Chantry, Ceoris, within Transylvania that would be its Domus Magnum in 980. From the beginning, Mordblund was a gifted if amoral student of magick, while quite adept at feigning the Christian virtues, he took after his master Etrius in regards to infernal magic. However, where Etrius flirted with and dabbled in infernal magics, Mordblund devoted himself to the complete exploration of Hell's many arts. Eventually discovered by Etrius as a full-blown practitioner of the dark arts, he was expelled from House Tremere and the Order of Hermes.

But with the discover of magick's decline in 996, Mordblund was recalled by Etrius' chief rival within Tremere's inner circle Goratrix to aid his former house as a agent provocateur. Mordblund was given a clandestine mission by Tremere through the auspices of Goratrix to plant critical evidence of diabolism within House Diedne as a distraction, after a particularly vicious disagreement between Tremere and the leader of Diedne, Grainne bani Diedne. As the key agent in Tremere's pogrom of slander against the druids of House Diedne, Mordblund won back his place within House Tremere after the Order of Hermes launched a Wizard's March against the druids in 1003. By the end of the Schism War in 1012, Mordblund has won back all his previously lost favor, save for that of his old master Etrius. After the war, Mordblund returned to Copenhagen in Denmark and settled there forming his own chantry. In the spring of 1094 a traveling pageant passed through the region and drew Mordblund's attention due to the infernal energies left in its wake, but it inexplicably vanished only to reappear in Nürnberg, in the Duchy of Franconia.

Seeking to discover the secrets of the infernal pageant, Mordblund summoned a aerial demon and journeyed for four days over the northern reaches of the Holy Roman Empire. Upon reaching Nürnberg, Mordblund discovered that Casmir, another hermetic wizard of House Tremere and his arch-rival for the attentions of Goratrix had entered the city before him and also investigated the otherworldly pageant. While each had been drawn to the city for different reasons, both wizards discovered that Goratrix had hidden the philosopher's stone in Nürnberg and both of the aging mages sought to acquire the stone for themselves. While Mordblund approached the problem through divination and manipulation, his rival and enemy, Casmir used brute force and intimidation to reach the goal. In the end, Mordblund reached the elixir of immortality first by striking a deal with the darker powers of the pageant. Unfortunately for Mordblund, the potion he drank was combination of concentrated poison and the vampiric blood of Goratrix, thus instantly killing him and Embracing him at the same time. Suddenly bereft of an avatar and unable to use true magick, Mordblund was completely vulnerable to the wrath of Casmir, who would have destroyed him if not for the timely intervention of a group of pageanteers.

Casmir was teleported away to nearly die in the freezing waters of the North Sea, while Mordblund was forced to take the shape of a young girl to hid his identity. As the pageant moved on from Nürnberg to Augsburg in Bavaria, Mordblund became the vampiric student of the ancient Lasombra storyteller, Theodoric. Despite the elder magister's influence, Mordblund became the pawn of Astarte, the Autumn Queen. To evade his enemies inside and outside the pageant, Mordblund was obliged to take the unlikely assistance of a group of mortal sorcerers who would shortly thereafter be drawn into undeath through the designs of another group of ancient vampires. Since the cataclysmic events of Augsburg during the summer of 1094, Mordblund has struggled to cope with the circumstance of being a vampire while trying to restore his lost magic. No longer able to leave the pageant and with limited resources, Mordblund has returned to infernal magics to speed his return to power, but he is torn in a struggle of allegiances between Astarte and Theodoric.
